Transport Ministry allocates 643 million rupees

By Lakmal Sooriyagoda The Transport Ministry had taken measures to allocate Rs. 643 million to install rail gates at unprotected railway crossings this year, sources said yesterday. The Ministry has reportedly identified 486 unprotected railway crossings though out the country and in the first round of 116 gates are to be installed this year. Accordingly, the authorities are to give priority to installing railway gates at crossing that have been identified as dangerous. The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) yesterday commended the decision taken by the transport Ministry to fix unprotected railway gates following its intervention to the issue. Human Rights Commissioner Dr. Prathibha Mahanamahewa said yesterday the HRCSL also received more than six human rights violations applications after media publications over Human Rights Commission’s intervention into the matter.
