Sri Lanka’s last mass scale hydropower project near completion

Colombo: The Ministry of Power and Energy sources say that over 75% of the construction of Sri Lanka’s last large scale hydropower project has been completed now.

The sources said that the turbines are being fixed in the power plant now in the Upper Kothmale hydropower project.

The Ministry expects to start electricity generation by the end of the year.

When completed, the run of river hydropower project consisting of two 75MW units will add 150 MW to the national grid to produce 409GWh energy per year.

The Government of Sri Lanka secured financial support in March 2002 from the Government of Japan to implement the project, signing of Loan Agreement SL-P74 on 28 March, 2002.

The Upper Kotmale Hydropower Project, at a cost of US$ 350 million is mainly funded by the Government of Japan under a loan agreement through the Japan Bank for International Cooperation.

The project will be implemented by the Ceylon Electricity Board under the supervision of the Ministry of Power and Energy.
