The SLFP yesterday said that the 20th Amendment should be implemented before Parliament was dissolved and that the next general election should be held under a new electoral system.

UNP MP and Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam recently stated that elections would be held soon according to the present electoral system either with or without the 20th Amendment.

Reacting to this statement, Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva questioned Kariyawasam’s authority to make such statements while saying that Kariyawasam had no power in Parliament and could not change the Constitution according to his whims and fancies. (JP)
