Protests are a matter of public importance

Issuing a statement regarding the protests against the recent electricity tariff hikes, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) observed that these protests are a matter of public importance and the parties concerned should act within the framework of law.

Observing the right to speech and the right to assembly are inalienable democratic rights enshrined in the constitution, the BASL recognised that the rights of the civil society and trade unions to engage in such protests should be within the framework of law.

The executive committee of the BASL had unanimously decided to issue this statement at its meeting held on 18 May, 2013.

“The BASL notes that several civil organisations have expressed their concerns and protests regarding the recent electricity tariff hikes, which are a matter of public importance. The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) recognises the rights of the civil society and trade unions to engage in such matters of importance within the framework of law and in the exercise of their fundamental civil liberties including the freedom of speech, expression and peaceful assembly, which, are inalienable democratic rights enshrined in the constitution. We urge all parties concerned to act within the framework of law, including permitting the exercise of such rights,” the BASL statement under the signature of its secretary said.
