Prof. Indraratna passes away

IN-3Prof. A. D. V. de Silva Indraratna, Emeritus Professor of Economics, University of Colombo passed away yesterday. Prof. Indraratna, recognized among his peers as the “the doyen of Economics teachers” contributed immensely to develop economics as a study area and to promote a dialogue on economic policy issues in the country.

At the time of his demise Prof. Indraratne was the President of Sri Lanka Economic Association, a position he held since 2003. Being a founder member of the Association, he also served as the first Secretary. He has also authored over ten books, some of which remain popular among students to date.  

Professor Indraratna was also the founder Professor of Economics (1968-1980), Founder Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences (1968-1974) and founder Director of the Demographic Training and Research Unit (1974-1978), of the University of Colombo. He was also the Founder Director of the Planning and Research Division of the University Grants Commission for 12.

A student of Dharmasoka College Ambalangoda, Professor Indraratna graduated from University of Ceylon, in June 1951with the degree of B.A. Honours in Economics. He pursued his postgraduate studies at the University of Birmingham, obtaining the Graduates’ Diploma in Commerce and the degree of Master of Commerce (M.Com.).
