Sri Lanka’s free education system has led to build up an educated society in the country and the present government is committed to secure the rights of free education for all, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said on Wednesday. Addressing the first convocation of the National School of Business Management (NSBM) held in the BMICH, the President noted that many students who have passed the GCE A/L examination face the problem of entering into local universities and decide to seek higher education from universities in foreign countries. He pointed out that the cost of students seeking education from foreign countries is about Rs. 50 billion of national wealth annually which is money that can be utilised for national development if the students can be provided the opportunities locally. The President pointed out that there is a need to plan job oriented degrees and praised the National Institute of Business Management (NIBM), which launched NSBM as an alternative system of higher education to produce a generation of knowledge-based workforce, for introducing 12 market-oriented degrees. The NSBM is established as the degree awarding school of NIBM offering undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs in the fields of business, computing and engineering. Ministers Dullas Alahapperuma, Bandula Gunawardena, Vice Chancellor of NSBM Dr. E.A. Weerasinghe and Deputy Minister Mohanlal Grero were also present at this occasion.
