President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday called on the country’s media institutions to help establish a moral and responsible media culture for the benefit of the people.

President Sirisena stressed that the heads of the Media institutions should be committed to fulfill their obligations to build a knowledgeable society for the advancement of the people.

While it is the responsibility of the media to criticise and point out the shortcomings and mistakes, it is also accountable to provide accurate information to the public for the benefit of the country, he said.

He made these remarks participating in a ceremony to mark the World Press Freedom Day held at the National Library auditorium in Colombo.

At the ceremony organised by the Sri Lankan University Teachers Association of Communication and Media Studies,  a set of proposals was submited to establish a righteous media culture in Sri Lanka.

President of the Sri Lankan University Teachers Association of Communication and Media Studies, Dr. Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa presented the set of proposals to the President.

The President further said that the present Government highly values the principles of media freedom and said that in the near future the Right to Information Bill also will be passed in Parliament.

“Some of the private media institutions work for an agenda of the political and cultural concepts of their owners. But it is their responsibility to use the given media freedom for the betterment of the country in a professional manner,” President Sirisena said.
