Colombo: Inter Company Employees’ Union (ICEU) yesterday said the police had disrupted its leaflet distribution campaign in the Maradana area.

The ICEU leaflet distribution campaign directed at the government’s alleged move to plunder the retirement funds EPF and ETF, was carried out opposite the Maradana Railway Station yesterday.

ICEU Senior Vice President, T. Hettiarachchi said the Maradana Police had approached the trade unionists distributing leaflets and asked them to stop the campaign saying it was polluting the environment.

“The police took us to the Station and asked us to stop the campaign saying the leaflets that fall on the road polluted the environment. We then showed them the garbage and other material strewn all over the place,” he said.

He added that the police had then warned them not to continue with the campaign or they would be forced to arrest them.

“According to the police, they were carrying out orders received from higher authorities,” Hettiarachchi said.  The ICEU has already carried out such campaigns in Ratmalana and Vauxhall Street in Colombo. – ColomboPage
