Over 7,000 human rights complaints last year

The Human Rights Commission (HRC) of Sri Lanka has said that it had received 7,752 complaints on alleged violations between the period of January 1st and December 20th last year. Head of the Commission, Dr. Prathiba Mahanamahewa told the media that the cases reported during the period included torture, harassment, abduction, shooting, education rights, university students’ rights, child rights, amongst others. The Commission had also received 369 complaints of torture in the Colombo office, while 194 complaints of torture had been lodged with the regional offices. The regional offices of Kandy, Matale and Anuradhapura had received the highest number of complaints 527, 559 and 592, respectively while the Batticaloa, Vavuniya and Jaffna regional offices had received 359, 329 and 217 complaints respectively in 2013. According to Dr. Mahanamahewa, the HRC has received 151 complaints in the first three weeks of this year.
