United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Councillor Abdul Majeed was sworn in as the Chief Minister of the Eastern Province yesterday before President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees.

Majeed was a representative of Trincomalee for the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) earlier and served as Minister of Co-operatives. However, SLMC expelled him from the party in 2004 and he subsequently joined the UPFA. Meanwhile former Chief Minister and the Leader of the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP) party Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan was appointed as an Advisor to the President – Pix by Nalin Hewapathirana
