Sri Lanka continues to ignore calls for a credible and independent probe into alleged rights abuses during the war and recent violence against religious minorities and abuse of force by the military are deeply concerning, the delegation of Canada told the UN Human Rights Council’s 24th Session on Thursday. “There must be accountability,” the Canadian delegation emphasised intervening to respond to UN Human Rights Chief Navi Pillay’s oral report on Sri Lanka’s human rights situation. While Sri Lanka’s achievements in physical reconstruction of the northern parts of the country are commendable, these projects alone will not ensure reconciliation and national stability, The Canadian delegation also asked the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights what action her office plans to take to monitor the Sri Lankan human rights situation between now and March 2014 when her full report is due. (DB)
