JVP Politburo Member and the party’s Chief Ministerial candidate for the Western Provincial Council election K.D. Lalkantha said that party would not end its campaign with the conclusion of elections like other parties, but would continue with it until the Government was defeated. Addressing a public meeting in Kosgama, Lalkantha proclaimed that the Government had planned to first hold elections for the Western and Southern Provincial Councils next year and then the Uva Provincial Council election followed by a presidential election and finally a general election. “The Mahinda Rajapaksa Government has planned a series of elections and we will continue with the campaign regardless of the outcome of the provincial council elections until we push the Government several steps back,” Lalkantha said. The senior party member pointed out that it was the JVP that had performed the duties of the Opposition and that Ranil Wickremesinghe and the main opposition United National Party (UNP) had failed to take up issues faced by the people. “The JVP will continue to perform the role of the country’s Opposition and will not give up until a people-friendly administration is established,” Lalkantha added.
