The main opposition United National Party is certain that there will be a presidential or parliamentary election in 2014 and will prepare for national elections in the coming year rather than provincial ones. UNP MP Mangala Samaraweera told a press conference at Sirikotha yesterday that the party had received reliable information that the Government was secretly planning a presidential election as early as March next year. “They are talking about provincial elections, but don’t be misled by that,” Samaraweera said. He said the UNP was determined to get its election machinery in top gear in readiness for a national election in the very near election. (DB)
