Govt. okays 7.6% rise in bus fares; operators want more

The Government yesterday announced that private bus fares will be increased by 7.6 percent with effect from 1 July.

Private Transport Minister C.B. Ratnayake has said that the bus fare hike would come into effect from 1 July and the minimum fare would be increased to Rs. 7.

The government has decided to increase the bus fare of Rs. 9 to Rs.10 and the Rs. 12 fare to Rs. 13.

Meanwhile, the private bus operators have demanded that bus fares be increased by 10 percent and has warned of launching a strike on Monday (27).
