Government says no to visit request

The Government has refused to agree to a visit to Sri Lanka by the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances until the Presidential Commission on Missing Persons concludes its work. In response to a report by the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances submitted to the UN Human Rights Council at its ongoing 27th regular session last Friday, the Government said that it feels the findings of the Presidential Commission could have some correlation with that of the Working Group. “Sri Lanka’s regular engagement with the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances continues and the Government will continue to maintain a close dialogue with the Working Group with a view to clarifying outstanding issues. To this end we are looking forward to the forthcoming meeting with the Working Group,” Sri Lanka told the 27th regular session of the UN Human Rights Council. Sri Lanka also maintained its opposition to the US sponsored resolution which mandated the UN Human Rights Council to launch an investigation on the war in Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan delegation, on Friday, also briefed the UN Human Rights Council on the Victim and Witness protection bill, which was submitted to Parliament last week.
