The first fatal accident on the first ever expressway claimed the life of a 26-year-old youth in pre-dawn hours of Friday, the police said.

Police Media Spokesman Superintendent of Police Ajith Rohana said the motorist lost control of the vehicle due to the excessive speed and went off the road tumbling 50 feet down.

The youth, a resident of Dehiwala and an employee of a mobile telecom firm, was seriously injured at the scene and succumbed to his injuries after he was admitted to the Nagoda Hospital in Kalutara. The maximum speed limit of the EO1 Southern Expressway is 100 kilo meters per hour.

The Colombo-Galle Expressway opened to public on November 27, 2011.
