Eastern Province candidate arrested

Former Eastern Provincial Council Chief Minister Najib A. Majeed was arrested yesterday for canvassing and intimidating a government servant after forcefully entering a postal voting centre in Kinniya.

One of Majeed’s supporters was also arrested by police for the same offence.

The former Chief Minister is contesting the general election from the Trincomalee district under the UPFA ticket.

Chief Minister Najib A. Majeed and his accomplice have been released on a Rs. 50,000 cash bail and two personal bails each when they were produced before the Trincomalee Magistrate this afternoon.
