Diplomatic community briefed on current developments

External Affairs Minister Professor G.L. Peiris and Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga this week briefed Ambassadors and High Commissioners accredited to Sri Lanka on current developments. The briefing by Minister Peiris included, among other topics, the census being carried out in the Northern Province, the team of full time officials under the Land Commissioner dealing with land issues as a matter of priority, the initiatives with regard to bilingual capability of youth, in particular the establishment of mixed schools on the basis of a decision by the Cabinet of Ministers, and the Government’s meetings with the special Rapporteur on Internally Displaced Persons Dr. Beyani. The Minister also informed the diplomatic community of a series of events involving the professional, academic and business communities and their role in working with the Government in implementing the objectives of the recently concluded Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga provided the Ambassadors and High Commissioners with a detailed briefing on the implementation process in respect of the recommendations of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission, and progress with regard to the National Action Plan. He also apprised the diplomats of the ongoing island-wide census to assess the human and property damages occurred since 1982 till the end of the conflict. This Census launched on 28 November will be completed within six months. The nationwide survey is a key recommendation of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC).
