The Colombo Magistrate’s Court yesterday rejected bail for the 21 university students who were arrested on 14  October at the Higher Education Ministry premises.

The students were arrested when they forcibly entered into the Ministry premises and allegedly caused damages to public property.

The Colombo Magistrate’s Court had rejected bail for the 21 university students stating that it did not possess the power to grant bail and further remanded the students till 12  November.

The lawyers representing the students have now submitted a petition to the Colombo High Court seeking bail.

The petition is to be taken up by the High Court on Wednesday (3).

Meanwhile, university students are continuing with their protest campaigns against the arrest of students with several protests organised for today and tomorrow.

Yesterday protests were held at the Sabaragamuwa University and at the Institute of Indigenous Medicine in Rajagiriya.

Three more protests have been organised at the Ruhuna and Peradeniya Universities and the Aesthetic Institute in Colombo.
