Colombo: A group of candidates of the major Opposition United National Party (UNP) for Kandy Municipal Council have planned to make a request from the party leadership to change the decision of naming Neranjan Wijerathna as the mayoral candidate for the Kandy MC at the upcoming election.

Wijerathna, the former Chief Administrator (Diyawadana Nilame) of the sacred Temple of the Tooth was named the Mayoral candidate of the Kandy Municipal Council despite several other veteran councillors being in the list.

They include former Mayors Kesara Senanayaka and Raja Pushpakumara.

The rebel candidates point out that Wijerathna lost the Central Provincial Council election also and resigned from the post of electoral organiser for Galagedara last year.
