The Cabinet of Ministers at their meeting last week approved the appointment of Y. G. Gnanathilake as the new Surveyor General of Sri Lanka.

The decision follows the retirement of U. K. S. P. Wijesinghe, a special grade officer in the Sri Lanka Surveyors’ Service, who stepped down from the post upon reaching the retirement age of 60 on 22 January 2025.

Gnanathilake, who is also a special grade officer within the Sri Lanka Surveyors’ Service, will assume duties as Surveyor General with immediate effect.

The Surveyor General heads the Survey Department of Sri Lanka, a key institution responsible for national mapping, land surveying, and geospatial data management.

The appointment was made based on a proposal submitted by Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation Minister K.D. Lalkantha and was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers on last Wednesday.
