Kumara Welgama

  • Says Gotabaya Rajapaksa is unsuitable for politics
  • Asks him to beware of traps set by others
  • Hints that leftists parties will unite in the future

Nawa Lanka Nidahas Pakshaya (New Lanka Freedom Party) Leader Kumara Welgama says former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is unsuitable for politics and therefore should not re-enter active politics once more.

“We wish him well. But we say do not return to politics. He is unsuitable. There are rumours he may be appointed as Prime Minister. However, it is better for him to stay home rather than be entrapped by others,” he said.

Welgama made these comments while addressing those gathered at the opening of the party’s head office in Battaramulla yesterday. The three-storied building in Battaramulla was declared open by former President Chandrika Kumaratunga.

According to Welgama, despite now taking different paths, the leftist parties will one day unite. He said all the leftist parties will come together to form a new Government and support President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

“Leftist parties always won by coming together. Though we have now formed a new group and Wimal Weerawansa as well as Dullas Alahapperuma have formed their own, there will be a point in time we will all unite. We will display the power of the left on that day,” he said.  MPs Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, Chandima Weerakkody, Patali Champika Ranawaka and others were present at the event.
