Colombo Fort Magistrate yesterday issued warrants for the arrest of former cricketer Aravinda de Silva and his wife, Priyanga Anushka Wijenayake, after they failed to appear in court as sureties in the case relating to the Airbus transactions.
The order was made when the case was taken up before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning. Kapila Chandrasena, who had been named as a suspect in the matter, is now deceased. His wife, who was granted bail in connection with the case and is currently abroad, had been released with de Silva and Wijenayake standing as
sureties.
The suspect was also absent from court when the case was taken up. As the sureties failed to appear as well, Magistrate Amarasena issued warrants against them.
Counsel appearing for the sureties told the court that de Silva and Wijenayake were unable to appear because de Silva’s mother had passed away, with her funeral scheduled for the same day.
Magistrate Amarasena directed that relevant documents concerning the matter be produced and that the circumstances be brought to the court’s attention when the warrants are taken up for recall.
