Warm reception to Lankan MPs in India

A group of Sri Lankan Members of Parliament (MPs) received a warm welcome in India during their visit as part of a capacity-building program.

India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar in an ‘X’ post said he had a warm interaction with Parliamentary colleagues from Sri Lanka visiting India for the PRIDE Capacity-Building Program.

“Appreciate their condemnation of terrorism and expressions of sympathy on the Pahalgam attack. Discussed our Neighbourhood First policy, underpinned by strong people-to-people ties. Reiterated our commitment to Sri Lanka’s development and progress,” Dr. Jaishankar added.

The Lankan MPs delegation was led by Deputy Speaker Dr. Rizvie Salih.

Indian Parliament Speaker Om Birla in his ‘X’post welcoming the Lankan delegation said: “Our discussions reaffirmed the deep-rooted cultural, spiritual, and democratic bonds between India and Sri Lanka.”

He said he stressed that terrorism, in whatever form it may exist, “is the biggest threat to our civilization and development today. Expressed hope that in the fight against terrorism, all countries will stay united with a common front and strategy. Thanked the Sri Lankan delegation for expressing its solidarity in India’s fight against terrorism. Also urged that Parliaments of the democratic countries need to work together against this global threat.”

He said he also discussed the importance of Parliamentary exchanges and capacity building, with special emphasis on how digital innovation and technology are strengthening legislative processes and public participation in both countries. It was heartening to note the growing collaboration between India and Sri Lanka in areas such as fintech, digital infrastructure, and connectivity—highlighted by the recent launch of Unified Payments Interface (UPI)-based payment systems in Sri Lanka and improved tourism links through sea ferry and flight services.
