The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the implementation of an updated National Livestock Policy aimed at strengthening the country’s livestock sector in response to evolving food security challenges and changing economic and social conditions.

The revised Policy replaces the existing framework, which the Government said required updating to reflect global and local developments affecting the livestock industry.

Announcing the decision at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing on Tuesday, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said the new Policy will focus on private sector-led development, market-oriented and competitive production, environmentally sustainable practices, support for small-scale farmers and rural livelihoods, and the promotion of science- and technology-based development through the expertise of local specialists.

The proposal to this effect was submitted by Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation Minister K.D. Lalkantha.
