On 30 May, Sarvodaya Fusion, with support from the US Embassy in Sri Lanka, launched USBus – a mobile American Space initiative aimed at expanding access to educational and cultural resources across the country.
The program began its journey at the University of Kelaniya and will travel throughout Sri Lanka over the next 18 months. Designed to engage youth, the USBus brings free American innovation, learning opportunities, and outreach directly to communities. The inaugural event featured the esteemed presence of US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie J. Chung, UGC Chairman Senior Professor Kapila Seneviratne, University of Kelaniya Vice Chancellor Senior Professor Nilanthi Renuka De Silva, Lanka Jathika Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement President Dr. Vinya Ariyaratne, and Sarvodaya Fusion Chairman Professor Rohan Samarajiva. The USBus builds on the US Embassy’s American Spaces network—dynamic hubs in Colombo, Kandy, Jaffna, Matara, and Batticaloa—by bringing the same spirit of learning, innovation, and exchange to underserved areas across Sri Lanka.
“The USBus is more than just a vehicle—it’s a symbol of American innovation and our enduring partnership with Sri Lanka,” said Ambassador Julie Chung. “By bringing the best of American excellence in education, technology, and cultural exchange directly to communities across the island, we’re not only expanding access to opportunity, but also deepening the connections between our nations—bringing America’s spirit of learning and collaboration to the heart of Sri Lankan communities.”
“By promoting English language learning, STEM education, and entrepreneurial leadership, we are investing in the next generation of innovators and leaders. We invite youth to visit the USBus and take part in this exciting journey. The Mobile American Space will spark curiosity, build skills, and help prepare our students to thrive in a globalised world,” said Professor Kapila Seneviratne.
The USBus will allow students to take part in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) workshops, 3D printing demonstrations, American English language learning, virtual reality experiences, and EducationUSA sessions on higher education opportunities in the United States. Each free session is designed to equip participants with essential 21st Century skills—fostering critical thinking, sparking innovation, and deepening their understanding of global challenges. These interactive experiences aim to empower students to navigate an increasingly complex world with confidence, creativity, and purpose.
The USBus will travel to leading educational institutions in Colombo as well as the Universities of Peradeniya, Ruhuna, Sabaragamuwa and Jaffna over the next several months. During its 18-month journey across all nine provinces and at least 10 districts, the USBus will prioritise areas without physical American Spaces, aiming to engage over 7,000 Sri Lankan youth.
