Ship-tracking data yesterday showed that a crude oil tanker intercepted by US forces in the Indian Ocean has altered course and was transmitting its position around 700 km south-east of Sri Lanka.

According to MarineTraffic, the tanker Tifani, with a carrying capacity of nearly 300,000 tonnes, is currently loaded and changed direction in the early hours of yesterday.

The vessel is sanctioned by the Office of Foreign Assets Control and is linked to an Indian shipping company also under US sanctions over alleged ties to Iran.

Tracking data indicates that the tanker departed the Gulf region on 10 April and made a brief stop near the southern port of Galle on 18 April before being intercepted by US forces. It had been expected to reach Singapore on Sunday prior to the course change.
