The United States Embassy in Colombo has urged American citizens in Sri Lanka to remain alert and enrol in the Smart Traveler Enrolment Program (STEP) to receive security updates in light of ongoing developments in the Middle East.

“We encourage all American citizens to sign up for STEP at [http://step.state.gov](http://step.state.gov) to get the latest security updates from the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate,” the embassy said in a message posted on its social media platforms.

“The US Department of State has no higher priority than the safety and security of Americans worldwide.”

The embassy noted that commercial travel routes which avoid transit through the Middle East are available for those planning to return to the United States. “If your travel plans have been affected and you wish to speak with a Consular Officer, walk-in hours are available Monday-Thursday, 1:00–2:00 p.m.”

“For urgent assistance or if you cannot visit during these hours, please contact the Embassy’s American Citizen Services Unit +94-11-202-8500 or email us via U.S. Citizens Services Navigator.
