The US has announced $ 2 million in emergency assistance to support Sri Lanka’s response to Cyclone Ditwah, as the storm continues to cause heavy flooding, landslides, and mounting humanitarian needs across the country.
In a statement on ‘X,’ US State Department Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott extended Washington’s condolences, noting the scale of destruction and the efforts of emergency responders.
“The United States extends deepest condolences to the people of Sri Lanka as Cyclone Ditwah continues to produce severe weather, flooding, and landslides. We mourn the loss of life and are grateful to those working tirelessly to provide critical assistance. The US stands ready to support relief efforts in the days ahead,” he said.
US Ambassador Julie Chung separately announced the funding commitment and Washington’s support for communities affected by the cyclone.
“Sri Lanka is facing difficult days as communities continue to be affected by Cyclone Ditwah, with heavy rains and flooding in many areas. The US stands in solidarity with Sri Lanka. Today, we are committing $ 2 million to support urgent relief efforts. This reflects our enduring partnership with Sri Lanka as families rebuild, now and in the days ahead,” she stated.
