United National Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe

The United National Party (UNP) yesterday informed the Election Commission regarding the appointment of Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe to the National List seat they secured at the general elections last year.

Earlier this month, Wickremesinghe was selected to the post by the party’s working committee, with the UNP General Secretary and former Parliamentarian Palitha Range Bandara telling the Daily FT that the “decision was unanimous”.

In a recent press release, UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardena stated: “We can see that the Opposition in Parliament lacks experience and understanding regarding national issues and international relations. Therefore, we as a party decided that we should expedite sending Ranil Wickremesinghe, who is experienced in facing such issues, to the Parliament.”

The letter notifying of the nomination was handed over to the Chairman of the Election Commission Nimal Punchihewa by UNP officials Palitha Range Bandara and former minister Sagara Rathnayake.

Wickremesinghe's nomination will be proposed at the next meeting of the Election Commission, which is expected to be held on Friday 18 June, and will subsequently be notified to Parliament. (AF)
