The United National Party (UNP) yesterday condemned the killing of Attorney-at-Law Buddhika Mallawarachchi and his wife, warning that the incident poses a serious threat to the rule of law and the integrity of Sri Lanka’s legal system.

In the statement, the UNP noted the broad daylight shooting on 13 February would have a significant adverse impact on law and order, which it described as already weakened by a series of recent killings.

The party drew parallels with incidents in other countries where attacks and threats against legal professionals have undermined the justice system.

The UNP also raised concerns over the handling of the investigation, alleging politicisation within the Police Department and questioning the ability of authorities to conduct an impartial probe.

Urging for immediate action, the party called the resignation of the Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananda Wijepala, the appointment of an appropriate investigative team in consultation with the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL), and administrative or legislative measures to implement protections outlined in the Council of Europe Convention for the Protection of the Profession of Lawyer.

The UNP noted it would support efforts to ensure adequate protection for lawyers in Sri Lanka.
