UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam yesterday charged that the Government was formulating plans to abolish the independent commissions established under the 19th Amendment. 

Issuing a press release Kariyawasam called on all progressive groups to rally around the UNP to form a strong resistance against the Government’s actions. 

“They are planning to create a climate where an authoritarian rule is possible, that’s why they want to dismantle the free, democratic and just space we created,” he stated, reminding the public that the road to achieve democracy was not easy.
