The United Nations (UN) has pledged support for Sri Lanka’s efforts to resettle people displaced by Cyclone Ditwah, while discussions with the Government have also focused on preparations for potential future disasters amid El Niño conditions.
UN Resident Coordinator Marc-André Franche held discussions yesterday with Chief of Staff to the President Prabath Chandrakeerthi at the Presidential Secretariat, with the Government’s post-Ditwah resettlement program receiving particular attention.
Chandrakeerthi briefed Franche on the Government’s plans to resettle people who lost their homes as a result of the cyclone and outlined measures being prepared to respond to potential disasters associated with El Niño conditions.
The discussions come as Sri Lanka continues to address the humanitarian and reconstruction fallout from Ditwah, while seeking to strengthen its preparedness for increasingly complex climate-related risks.
Franche said the UN was ready to provide the necessary assistance to support the successful implementation of the Government’s resettlement and disaster preparedness programs.
The meeting also focused on strengthening cooperation between the Government and the UN in responding to future emergencies and building resilience against climate-related shocks.
UN Partnerships and Development Finance Specialist Azam Bakeer Markar and UN Sri Lanka Humanitarian and Resilience Officer Wagisha Perera also participated in the meeting.
