Two COVID-related deaths reported in SL

  • Health authorities say no alarming situation but need to take proper health precautions

Health authorities have revealed that two persons have died of COVID due to the COVID-19 variant that is now spreading in the country. 

At a media briefing held at the Health Promotion Bureau, Northwestern Medical Faculty Chief Professor of Medicine Prof. Dushantha Medagedara citing statistics of the Sri Lankan Institute of Virology said that between 9%-13% of patients with respiratory issues are now infected with the new strain of COVID-19.

However, according to Prof. Medagedara, the prevailing COVID-19 infection is of very low severity and its harmful effects are minimal.

He said that at the moment, there was no alarming situation and no need to panic unnecessarily but emphasised on taking required health precautions.

Prof. Medagedara stressed the need of certain groups who have respiratory issues to be vigilant and to follow given health guidelines on COVID-19.
