The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the establishment of the Truth and Reconciliation Mechanism in Sri Lanka.

The move comes following a preliminary review of South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission and taking into account the work they have done.

“Two Ministers visited South Africa at the invitation of the South African International Relations and Cooperation Minister to conduct a preliminary study on South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. They held discussions with the South African President, International Relations and Cooperation Minister and other heads of the South African Government,” Cabinet Co-Spokesman and Minister Bandula Gunawardena said at the post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday. The Cabinet of Ministers approved the joint-Cabinet paper to this effect submitted by Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe and Foreign Affairs Minister Ali Sabry PC on Monday.
