Trial against former Energy Minister Jayakody on 17 June

The Colombo High Court yesterday fixed 17 June for the commencement of the corruption trial against former Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody following the conclusion of the pre-trial conference.

The case was taken up before High Court Judge Rashantha Godawela, who also ordered summons to be issued on two prosecution witnesses to appear before court on the trial date.

The Bribery Commission has filed charges against Jayakody over allegations dating back to 2016, when he served as Manager of the Production and Imports Division of Lanka Fertilizer Company.

According to the prosecution, he is accused of causing a loss of Rs. 8.8 million to the Government by awarding a contract to a private company for carpet installation work at the company’s warehouse premises.
