The Treasury has informed all Government agencies to limit its bonus payments for public sector employees this year given the ongoing economic circus.

As per the Treasury payment of bonuses to employees of Government Corporation Statutory Boards and Companies has been limited.

The Treasury also informed that the bonus payment can be made subject to a maximum limit of only Rs. 25,000 for employees of Government Corporation Statutory Boards and Companies.

Sri Lanka’s public sector has over 1.5 million employees. Many economists opined that this decision was unfair to the majority of the population, especially given the economic hardships they have encountered amidst the worst financial crisis Sri Lanka faced in its 74 years post-independence.

“The Government should have rather been exemplary to the people. This is disappointing,” they claimed.
