Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) General Secretary Tilvin Silva and his delegation in New Delhi on the final day of their five-day visit to India.

Jaishankar said the two sides had a ‘good discussion’ on strengthening the bonds of friendship between the two countries. “As a trusted partner, India will always support Sri Lanka’s progress and prosperity,” he said in a social media post.

Silva led a five-member JVP delegation to India from 27 September to 1 October at the invitation of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), under its ‘Know BJP’ program. The JVP is the main constituent party of Sri Lanka’s ruling National People’s Power (NPP). The BJP said the visit was intended to strengthen engagement between the two parties, exchange organisational experience and deepen ties.

The delegation comprised Silva, JVP Central Committee Member Chandrika Adikari, MP Aboobucker Athambawa, District Committee Member Kabilan Suntharamoorthy and International Department Member Kalpana Madhubhashini.

The delegation held talks with BJP National General Secretary (Organisation) B.L. Santhosh and other senior party figures on the BJP’s organisational structure, grassroots membership network and development programs in India. Earlier discussions during the visit also touched on Indian fishermen, refugee resettlement and cooperation between the two countries.

The delegation also met Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and was welcomed at the Delhi BJP office by Delhi BJP President Harsh Malhotra. Its program included meetings with the BJP’s women’s and youth organisations and visits to the Indian Parliament and the National War Memorial.
