Three more witnesses testify before Committee probing suspended IGP Deshabandu

The Committee of Inquiry investigating alleged gross abuse of power by suspended Inspector General of Police T.M.W. Deshabandhu Thennakoon on Monday heard testimony from three additional witnesses. 

The Committee, Chaired by Supreme Court Judge P.P. Surasena, comprising Justice W.M.N.P. Iddawala and National Police Commission Chairman E.W.M. Lalith Ekanayake, recorded evidence.

During the previous sitting held on 11 June, four witnesses gave evidence before the Committee, but the testimony of one witness could not be concluded. Therefore, the said witness appeared on Monday and concluded his testimony. In addition, three more witnesses gave and concluded their evidence when the Committee was convened on Monday. 

With this, a total of seven witnesses have completed giving evidence before the Committee. 

During the proceedings, Senior Deputy Solicitor General (President’s Counsel) Dileepa Peiris and Deputy Solicitor General Rajitha Perera, representing the Attorney General’s Department, along with R.S. Weerawickrama, Attorney-at-Law, appearing on behalf of suspended IGP cross-examined the witnesses.

The Committee of Inquiry also convened yesterday for further investigation.
