Thailand and Sri Lanka deepen social development ties

Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Thailand, Wijayanthi Edirisinghe met with the Minister of Social Development and Human Security of Thailand, Varawut Silpa-archa, on 9 May at the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security in Bangkok.

During the meeting, Ambassador Edirisinghe expressed her sincere appreciation for the support extended by the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security in facilitating the National Referral Mechanism (NRM) for victims of human trafficking, particularly for Sri Lankan nationals rescued from cybercrime centres operating in Myanmar. She informed the Minister that all Sri Lankan victims have now been successfully rescued and repatriated to Sri Lanka.

The Ambassador extended the gratitude of the Government of Sri Lanka to the Royal Thai Government for its steadfast assistance throughout this humanitarian effort.

In response, Minister Varawut Silpa-archa acknowledged the strong collaboration between the two countries and assured the Ambassador of Thailand’s continued support in addressing any future challenges. He also appreciated Sri Lanka’s commitment to mutual cooperation on human rights and social protection.

Both parties welcomed the shared initiatives of Sri Lanka and Thailand to protect the rights of women and children, including efforts to strengthen women’s representation in national parliaments and other decision-making bodies.

The meeting underscored the enduring partnership between Sri Lanka and Thailand, built on shared values and regional solidarity in advancing human dignity and social development. The Head of Chancery A.W.S Samanmali and Minister Counsellor (Commercial) Vireshika Banadara also joined the discussion.
