State Vesak Festival 2025 in Nuwara Eliya

The State Vesak Festival for Buddhist Era 2569 (2025) will be celebrated at the International Buddhist Centre Temple in Nuwara Eliya, following guidance from the Most Venerable Mahanayaka Thero and the All Island Shasanarakshaka Mandalaya.

This year’s celebrations will carry the deeply meaningful theme “Bhajetha Miththe Kalyane–Bhajetha Purisuththame,” which encourages the public to “associate with noble friends of good qualities.”

The Cabinet of Ministers at their meeting on Monday approved that Vesak Week will officially be observed from 10-16 May, paving the way for a nationally coordinated event with a range of religious and cultural programs planned throughout the country.

“These initiatives will be coordinated by the Buddhasasana Ministry, Public Administration Ministry, and the Department of Buddhist Affairs, ensuring nationwide participation and reverence,” Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said on Tuesday at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing.

The festival aims to foster spiritual reflection, unity, and moral upliftment, in keeping with the teachings of the Buddha and the spirit of Vesak.

The joint proposal, put forward by the Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government Minister and Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs Minister, was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
