The Cabinet of Ministers last week approved entering into an agreement with Poland to allow convicted citizens of either country to serve their sentences in their home country, supporting their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
The move seeks approval to sign a prisoner transfer agreement between Sri Lanka and the Republic of Poland.
Under the country’s Transfer of Offenders Act No. 5 of 1995, arrangements can be made for foreign nationals convicted in Sri Lanka to serve their sentences in their home countries. The law also allows Sri Lankan citizens convicted and sentenced to imprisonment in another country to be transferred back to Sri Lanka to serve the remainder of their sentences.
The proposal was submitted by Justice and National Integration Minister Harshana Nanayakkara.
