Sri Lanka invites WHO Chief for 2025 South Asia Health Summit in Colombo

The Government has invited the World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to undertake a visit to Sri Lanka for the South Asia Regional Conference scheduled for October 2025 in Colombo.

The invitation was extended by Health Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, who is in Geneva for the 78th World Health Assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO) met with Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

The talks focused on the current state of Sri Lanka’s health sector and outlined ambitious plans for its future.

Key topics included the establishment of 1,000 new primary health care centres across the country, mobilising support from international organisations and donors, and enhancing the delivery of health services with WHO assistance.

The discussion also addressed the growing concern of health professional migration. Both parties explored sustainable solutions aligned with WHO guidelines to retain skilled medical personnel within the country.
