Sri Lanka, South Korea discuss strengthening economic, employment and development cooperation

Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment Deputy Minister Arun Hemachandra held bilateral talks with his counterpart, Republic of Korea Foreign Affairs Deputy Minister Eui-Hae Cecilia Chung, in Seoul on Wednesday (25), focusing on enhancing economic ties and expanding overseas employment opportunities.

The discussions, held at the Foreign Affairs Ministry in Seoul, covered a broad range of issues aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation. Key areas included economic collaboration, development assistance, overseas employment, and security cooperation, all aligned with Sri Lanka’s ongoing economic recovery and progress in debt restructuring.

Deputy Minister Hemachandra expressed gratitude for South Korea’s timely support following Cyclone Ditwah and requested continued assistance for Sri Lanka’s national reconstruction initiatives. 

He also highlighted the growing social and cultural engagement between the two countries, noting that the interaction of Sri Lankan youth with Korean culture is contributing to stronger people-to-people ties.

Next year, Sri Lanka and South Korea will celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations. Both sides agreed to mark the milestone with high-level visits and initiatives to strengthen institutional ties, reaffirming their shared commitment to enhancing the Sri Lanka–Republic of Korea partnership in the years ahead.
