Sri Lanka Journalists for Global Justice (SLJGJ) in a statement has strongly and unequivocally condemned the heinous assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei by the US and Israel, and the unlawful war imposed on Iran in the midst of diplomatic efforts to find a solution to the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program.

The statement also said the following.

The Ayatollah was not only Iran’s spiritual leader but a global icon against Western and Zionist imperialism, and hegemonic designs. This cowardly act, carried out as part of an illegal war in violation of the UN Charter and civilised norms, is utterly reprehensible. The killing of a revered leader of a nation with such a proud and ancient civilisation follows the recent kidnapping of Venezuela’s democratically elected President and his wife by the US military. This blatant disregard for Venezuelan sovereignty and the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader show a disturbing and barbaric “might is right” trend in world politics.

Equally abominable is the failure of the international community to take effective action against such practices without confining their condemnation to empty words.

We are also deeply disturbed by the Sri Lankan Government’s failure to condemn the assassination of Ayatollah Khamenei, a leader of a friendly nation that has supported us through thick and thin with military, economic, and diplomatic aid.

We urge the Government to condemn the killing of Ayatollah Khamenei and his family, as well as the barbaric bombing that killed more than 100 primary schoolgirls on the war’s first day. Finally, we call on the Government to rise to the occasion, as true socialists would do, and issue an urgent call for peace and a resolution of the conflict through UN mechanisms.
