Speaker of Parliament Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne

Speaker of Parliament Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne yesterday announced a ban on the live broadcast of Jaffna District MP Ramanathan Archchuna’s Parliamentary statements for the next eight sessions, starting today (20).

The decision was made in response to controversial remarks made by the MP, which the Speaker deemed harmful to national unity and reconciliation.

As a result, Archchuna’s speeches in Parliament on 20-21 March, 8-10 April and 6-8 May will not be aired on audio-visual or social media platforms.

Announcing the decision in Parliament, the Speaker stated that any occasional derogatory, indecent or vulgar remarks made by MP Archchuna would also be removed from the official Hansard records.

Dr.Wickramaratne emphasised that this temporary suspension serves as a warning against the use of inflammatory language in Parliament.

The Speaker further stated that he would review MP Archchuna’s conduct during the restricted period to determine whether the ban should be lifted after the eight sessions.
