The Colombo Magistrate’s Court yesterday ordered the release on bail of Shiranthi Rajapaksa, wife of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who was arrested over the alleged misappropriation of funds linked to the ‘Siriliya Saviya’ organisation.
Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama released her on two surety bonds of Rs. 10 million each and cash bail of Rs. 100,000, and imposed an overseas travel ban.
Shiranthi Rajapaksa was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) over allegations of criminal misappropriation and financial irregularities involving an account linked to the ‘Siriliya Saviya’ Fund. The investigation concerns the alleged misuse of Rs. 10 million provided to the organisation by the National Savings Bank (NSB).
Earlier in the day, a medical report submitted to the court indicated that she requires bypass surgery. After examining the report, Bodaragama said in open court that it contained details of her medical condition and indicated the need for the surgery. He also noted that the report had been submitted with a covering letter from the Colombo National Hospital Director.
