Former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa has filed an anticipatory bail application before the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court, citing the possibility of arrest at the airport on her return to Sri Lanka from overseas.

The application submitted on Monday, which seeks bail in advance of a possible arrest, asks that she be released on bail under any conditions should she be taken into custody. The move follows a notice for Rajapaksa, the wife of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, to appear before the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) to give a statement.

Rajapaksa left for Singapore from Bandaranaike International Airport early on 16 September, 2026 to receive medical treatment, a day after being admitted to a private hospital in Colombo. Police had reportedly notified her to appear before the FCID on 24 September, 2026.

The FCID later said she had travelled overseas despite being summoned. A member of the Rajapaksa family denied this, saying the summons was received only after she had arrived at the airport and was preparing to leave the country.
