The Colombo High Court yesterday ruled that former Deputy Minister Sarana Gunawardena is guilty of corruption charges filed against him by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).

The verdict was delivered by Colombo High Court Judge Mohammed Mihail, concluding proceedings in four separate cases linked to Gunawardena’s tenure as Chairman of the Development Lotteries Board (DLB) in 2006, where he was accused of causing financial losses to the State through the irregular procurement of vehicles on a rental basis.

Having found the accused guilty on all four indictments, the High Court Judge imposed a sentence of 16 years’ rigorous imprisonment of four years on each count and was ordered to pay a fine of Rs. 1.8 million.
