Samudika Jayaratne officially assumed duties yesterday as the 42nd Auditor General (AG) of Sri Lanka, becoming the first woman to hold the position.

She was unanimously approved by the Constitutional Council on Tuesday (3) during a meeting held at the Parliament Complex, chaired by Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne.

Her letter of appointment was formally handed over by Secretary to the President Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday.

Jayaratne, who previously served as Senior Deputy Auditor General, was appointed following a prolonged vacancy in the post since 8 April 2025, after the retirement of former AG W.P.C. Wickramaratne.

Jayaratne holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Special) Degree and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. She is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka and the Association of Public Finance Accountants of Sri Lanka.

Several earlier nominations for the position were rejected by the Constitutional Council before Jayaratne’s name received unanimous approval. Dharmapala Gammanpila had served in an Acting capacity till 5 December 2025.
